Instituto Raoni

For several years, Cultures of Resistance has has supported indigenous Kayapó opposition to the Brazilian government’s proposed Belo Monte Dam on the Xingu River in the Amazon. The dam would have a disastrous impact on the Kayapó homeland. From the initial indigenous declaration of resistance issued in Raoni, to a 2008 summit in Altamira--the largest indigenous gathering in the Brazilian Amazon in nearly twenty years--up to the present, we have provided funding an assistance to Xingu activists and the Instituto Raoni, an advocacy group that collaborates with them. The Cultures of Resistance network also has a short film in production, “The Battle for the Xingu,” that includes footage from the Altamira summit.
